12 Critical Habits for Losing 50 Pounds in 6 Months

Losing 50 pounds in 6 months? I know that reaching that pound-shedding achievement is a hard commitment, with all the barbecue parties and eat out feasts that are doomed to distract you from your weight loss devotion. Although I know that getting that fit body is hard as one can imagine, – count me on that, my friend – the last thing I want you doing is straining yourself too much up to the point of crossing the health risk line.

I once had that fat bump on my belly which reminds me of my guilty eating spree in front of my laptop while working. But before all my pants start to be small for me one by one due to my stretching waistline, I discovered – and I will recommend – these critical habits that are significant to help you succeed in losing the extra pounds.

1. Stop comparing yourself to other people

I put this one on top of my list because, yes, it is one of the most typical distractions one can ever face in the course of losing weight. “Oh, that guy got slim in just three months” or “I should be as slim as him”. This habit of comparing yourself to others will start the frustration and you may just end in the giving up zone.

Anyway, it is not bad to take “fitspiration” from other individuals who had their successful journey to their weight loss goals. Just remember that your path is always different from any other person who had gone through the process of losing weight. Stop comparing.

2. Track your food intake but do not deprive yourself

One thing that may come to mind when talking about losing weight is that you need to limit strictly your food. Well, “limiting your food” has some truth to it, but it does not mean that you have to starve yourself and deprive your stomach with decent eating.

You can still hang out with friends; just choose a place that has a wide variety of menu so you and the squad can meet in the middle. You order a light meal while they have their own charge of calories.

3. Do not let your world revolve around losing 50 pounds in 6 months alone

In losing weight, balance is really a crucial habit. I think at some point I was also lured with the idea of totally changing my entire lifestyle. The idea of committing to weight loss like a monk consigning its life to his religion really crossed my mind. Well, commitment is one thing that is also important in this goal, but just learn to balance it on your current way of living.

You just have to make one small change at a time and maintain it day by day. That way, you are slowly adapting yourself to the weight loss plan while not losing the balance in your life.

4. Create a weight loss diary and utilize weight loss materials

If you are the type who likes writing about your daily activities like me, then starting a weight loss diary is just a piece of cake. It does not need to be well written, just be real on what you will write and record your true progress. This can help you track your development or if you had been taking an unconscious U-turn on your losing 50 pounds in 6 months plan.

There are also mobile apps that can help you in tracking as well as reading materials to guide you in the process.

5. Knowing the exercise that suits you is important

Rigid exercise is not my thing. And for a lot of people, that goes the same. Although you are not going to starve yourself, you still have a diet plan that you need to be faithful to. So what’s the connection between the two? Well, when you exercise too much, I’m sure that you are going to be as hungry as hell and all you want to do is devour that cheeseburger your brother is happily munching.

With that, you have to come up with a routine that can still compensate your exercise. How about biking? Weightlifting? Basketball? You choose.

6. Be mindful of that “cheat day” idea

Well, I can say that indulging yourself to that cheat day once in a long while will not hurt too much. Once you are shedding those pounds, you will feel great and confident that nothing can stop you. But I am telling you now that one barbecue party can make your strong resolve crumble.

Still, I don’t want to have the picture of you drooling over a juicy Kebab. You can have one stick but do not long for more because once you start the munching, there is no stopping. You can do this once, just don’t make it a habit if you are really keen on losing 50 pounds in 6 months.

7. Take it one pound at a time

Most weight loss newbies usually rush for the finish line as soon as they step on the starting point. What I need you to remember is that losing weight is not a race; it is a slow process that is bound with patience. At first, try jogging a couple of minutes then improve it day by day. When it comes to your diet, learn how to “portion control” so you still get to eat the food that you love.

8. Eat healthier food

Portioning does not mean that you get to eat a slice of fatty burger, five pieces of fries, and two gulps of soda. Dividing your food allotment in a meal also requires you to substitute some food with the ‘healthier’ ones. These foods are those that are not processed, or at least in a minimal level for you to losing 50 pounds in 6 months.  Maybe you can change your cheeseburger with a serving of salad and your soda with natural orange juice.

9. Do not tie yourself up in the weighing scale

Peeking on your everyday weight loss progress might be tempting. I know that somehow this can give a sense of victory whenever you shed a pound a two in a day, but seeing it shoot up with three pounds can really be discouraging. What you need to understand is that your weight can fluctuate in any day but it does not mean that a three pound gain can ruin your collective efforts. Take a break from the weighing scale once in a while, but do not slack on your weight loss routine.

Also, if you keep on checking, it might make you overly paranoid and this is where the frustration sets in.

10. What you drink is as important as what you eat.

Yes, you tossed that mashed potato away or quit barbecue, but the thing is that you are sipping a high-fat chocolate shake right now. If you are serious about losing 50 pounds in 6 months, you have to remember that what you drink is as important as what you eat. I suggest that you drink a lot of water and remove the creamer on your morning coffee.

Whole milk is also a no-no. Still, you can have milk by changing it to skim. This will cut your milk-gained fat by half but it does not mean that milk is going to be the key to your weight loss. There is no such thing as “lose weight by drinking milk”.

11. Prefer cooking and eating at home

You can have a day out with friends, but most of the time, I suggest that you prepare your own meals. This way, you can evade the temptation of ordering “guilty food” or feel deprived because you just can’t have a whole steak on your own.

Another important thing is that when you prepare your own meals, you know exactly what is on it like what ingredients you included or if it is not too caloric. But when you eat in restaurants, it might also be tempting for a waiter to lie that there is no such thing as a calorie machine on their menu. Do this if you want to losing 50 pounds in 6 months.

12. ‘Close’ the kitchen after eating

This that not mean that you have to barricade your kitchen so you won’t be barging in looking for food.  You just have to make sure that you don’t have any leftovers or temptation to crave for when you feel hungry. A saucer with a few sweets on it might drive your head crazy and steal your focus on your routine.  This practice can lessen the chance of you having a cheat day or a little “self-reward”.

Like a restaurant, you also have to close the shop once the eating is done. There is no place in your kitchen to be a round-the-clock fast food chain.

Losing 50 pounds in 6 months is like accepting the challenge to enter the Big Brother house. Once you decided to boot out, you lose terribly. But when you were able to fight all the drama and accomplished the tests, there is a higher chance that you will be the winner, or the runner-up to say the least.

In every aspect, weight loss is equitable to commitment. As what the cliché states, “no pain, no gain”. Just make sure that what you will gain are not extra calories but a number of lost pounds. Once you achieve that, we will be there cheering for you in the comment section.
